12 Themes for Elevating Equity in the Built Environment
Built environment practitioners have the power and responsibility to influence how communities grow and gather long beyond the life of a project. Perhaps you can picture how a space that is safe and welcoming to all looks and feels—but how do you go about moving that outcome from a vision to reality?
Regenerative work facilitates positive outcomes across social, cultural, and ecological systems, and Living Future believes that justice and equity are at the core of creating a regenerative future. Despite shifting tides surrounding equity, inclusion, and related topics, these values remain central to the future we are striving to create. A truly regenerative future is one in which community members are intentionally and actively engaged in co-designing and co-creating their built environment so that it reflects their values, meets their needs, and cultivates thriving communities.
A truly regenerative future is one in which community members are intentionally and actively engaged in co-designing and co-creating their built environment so that it reflects their values, meets their needs, and cultivates thriving communities.
Through the Equity in the Built Environment (EBE) Initiative, Living Future sought to reflect on, re-imagine, and refine how equity shows up in all of our programs. From 2023 to 2026, we performed in-depth analyses of our current programs as well as other industry standards and frameworks, conducted research, and engaged with a diverse range of organizations and individuals working toward aligned goals. Our latest report, 12 Themes for Elevating Equity in the Built Environment, highlights what we learned through the EBE Initiative and equips practitioners with practical starting points for how to intentionally consider and center equity within building project processes and outcomes. These 12 themes are not intended to be a comprehensive checklist; rather, they are meant to raise awareness, inspire reflection, and spark consideration for where and how a project or process can be intentionally shaped to achieve more equitable outcomes.

Special thanks to our EBE Steering Committee, the engagement partners who so generously shared their time and expertise, and the Freedom Together Foundation for supporting this work. While the focused effort of the EBE Initiative has concluded, Living Future’s commitment to keep equity foundational in our work endures, and we look forward to helping steward and support further action toward industry transformation.
Whether you are in the early stages of your equity journey or have been at it for years, this report includes insights, resources, conversation prompts, and more to help inform approaches for elevating equity throughout your work. We invite you to read the report and return to it often as we continue collectively moving toward a regenerative future that is socially just, culturally rich, and ecologically restorative.
